# Scanning

> Shooting a pile on the Scan tab, the camera prompt, and the pile browser

Scan is the first tab. It takes the photos every later step uses, and those photos go on your eBay listing. A clear, flat, well-lit shot matters more than the match shown while you shoot.

## Camera access

iOS asks for the camera the first time you open Scan. The prompt reads **DexFlip needs the camera to scan your cards.** There is no earlier prompt, because nothing else in the app needs the camera up front.

To change your answer later, open the iOS **Settings** app, then **Apps > DexFlip > Camera**. When you come back to Scan the camera starts on its own.

## Shooting a card

    Hold the phone over the card. An outline follows the card once it is found. The pill above it shows the live match, or **Turn the card upright** if the card is sideways.

  <Step title="Press the shutter">
    The shot straightens and crops itself. The preview shows the front with **Retake**, **Flip to back** and **Next card**.

  <Step title="Shoot the back, if you want it">
    Tap **Flip to back** and shoot again. The preview then reads **Front ✓ linked**. To skip the back after all, tap **Cancel** in the bottom right.

    Tap **Next card**. The card is saved and joins the Review queue.

**The live match does not need to be right.** It is a preview. You confirm or correct every card in Review.

**A back photo is optional.** A card without one lists with its front only, and Review and Compose note that it has no back.

## Finishing a sitting

* **Review**, at the bottom right, ends the sitting and opens the Review tab.
* **Done**, at the top left, ends the sitting and goes to Home.
* Leaving the Scan tab any other way also saves the card in progress.

## Pile

The thumbnail at the bottom left opens **Pile**, the cards shot since you opened the camera. Tap a card to see it large.

| Delete back photo | Removes the back. The card keeps its front                                                              |

<Warning>
  Deleting from the pile cannot be undone. The photos are gone from the phone.

**Open pile** on Home shows the same browser over your newest 200 cards, read-only.

## Notes

* Scan hides the tab bar. Use **Done** or **Review** to leave.
* A message in the viewfinder such as **That shot didn't come back. Try it again.** means the shot was not saved. Shoot it again.
* Photos are stored inside the app, never in your photo library. Location and other photo metadata are removed.
